
There are two possible endings for the game. If you have not finished Blasphemous and don’t want spoilers click out of this article and go finish the game. Other members of the legion guard areas of the Archcathedral Rooftops. She guards the final room before Father Escribar and takes up Mea Culpa in the good ending. Another member, Crisanta of the Wrapped Agony, was at least partially responsible for the massacre of The Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow. The Anointed Legion A member of the Anointed Legion Guarding the Archcathedral RooftopsĪfter collecting all the Holy Wounds, The Penitent One has their first fight with a member of the Anointed Legion, Esdras. The Visages remain in the Dream not because of punishment however, but to keep the Holy Wounds out of the hands of the unworthy. The fervor of these three saints created the three Golden Visages that guard the Holy Wounds needed to enter the Mother of Mothers.


These are bodies of saints believed to not decay due to the holiness of the individual. This is of course a reference to Catholic incorrupt saints. In addition the Penitent One can travel to the dream through the bodies of Incorrupt saints found after boss fights. His punishment for being a false saint was condemnation to the Dream. The first is the fountain in Albero, from which the Penitent One can visit the Blessed Lord of the Salty Shores. Several gateways to the realm exist in the world. The Dream is a purgatory-like realm between life and death that the Penitent one must travel to to meet some helpful NPCs. Blasphemous Lore Explained: The Denizens of the Dream The incorrupt body of Aurea is one gateway into The Dream. Doing this is necessary for the true ending for reasons that I’ll explain later. This thorn grows as the penitent one accumulates guilt by destroying Confessor Statues scattered through out Cvstodia. The Penitent One is then given a thorn to fit into the pommel of the sword by Deogracias, the witness and narrator to the acts of the miracle. The sword then formed from the figure of the father she had used to strike her chest impaling her and turning her to stone. The Penitent One’s sword, Mea Culpa (My Guilt/Fault), was created when a young woman prayer to the father for punishment. They were excommunicated and subsequently massacred when their goals came to oppose Father Escribar’s after his resurrection. The Penitent One is the last surviving member of a group of silent warrior monks known as The Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow. This is what is refered to in game as The Greivous Mracle.Įxplained: The Penitent One and Mea Culpa One of the Confessor statues needed to accumulate guilt in Mea Culpa. Escribar also emerged reborn from the ash as the final boss, The Last Son of the Miracle. Any caught in this ash either died or reemerged as The Punished, the monsters you fight throughout the game. This tree however, caught fire, either on it’s own or set alight by the bishops, covering The Mother of Mothers in ash. He too would slowly turn into a giant tree. Years later, the papal figure of Cvstodia, Father Escribar, would turn his throne to his congregation, insisting the miracle had forsaken them. The tree would continue to leak burning gold sap up until the present.


The young man referred to as “The Twisted” became revered as a church father and a great cathedral, The Mother of Mothers was built around the tree. The religion of Cvstodia is built around this event. This tree was named the Knot of Three Words after his last words, “My great guilt”. Three years after his death a tree sprang up from his remains. As he sat and prayed on a log roots sprang up around him and through his body. This tree, comprised of three entwined trunks, grew from the body of a young man who asked the High Wills (God in this universe) for punishment. The First Miracle in Cvstodia was the creation of The Knot of the Three Words. However with the second game coming out in just a few short years, now is the best time to tackle it. So to get even a piece of the story, the player needs to read through and interpret a great deal of text. Much like Dark Souls, most of the game’s story is relayed via cryptic item descriptions. Blasphemous lore is an incredibly tricky knot to untangle.
